Simchas Beis Hashoeva in Riga, Latvia.
Once again, Chabad Lubavitch of Riga led by Rabbi Mordechai Glazman & Rabbi Shneur Kot, celebrated the holiday of Sukkot & Simchat Beit Hashoeva. The event was held in the main park of Riga- Vermansky Park and was a grand success. The cold weather did not deter anyone. Over 500 Jewish men, women & children of all types attended the grand event. The festive atmosphere and booming Jewish music attracted many a passerby. Emotions ran deep for many participants who performed the mitzva of lulav & etrog for the first time in their life! Rabbi Glazman commenced the program with an opening address of blessings for a gut yom tov and then the representative of the "sochnut" – agency in the Baltics recounted to all the participants how he had spoken to his family Erev Yom Tov and they pitied him because he would be enjoying the holiday atmosphere like in Israel. But behold, even in Riga, in the center of the city, Jews were happily celebrating the holiday of sukkot. A group of students from the Chabad School in Riga then recited the 12 Torah passages and a Jewish band that played original Jewish music then followed. Next, the large crowd watched as Jewish children performed beautiful dances thus celebrating Simchat Beit Hashoeva and then joined in thus creating a big unified circle of joyful Jewish people. It was a beautiful sight to behold. The exciting program then continued with a carnival organized & led by students. Many different & enjoyable booths were set up and the crowd was free to take pleasure in them at their convenience. In addition, a Succah was erected for all to perform the mitzvah of eating in the Succah- "leishev bassucah". All evening long, people were seen streaming in and out of the Succah. The evening was brought to a close with an incredible raffle consisting of special prizes such as a camera, stereo system, etc… All left the park with strong feelings of Jewish pride and a great sense of accomplishment.
